Assocham has done an analysis of latest data released by Reserve Bank of India, which shows that State Bank of India has the largest number of ATMs in non metro and semi urban regions. The data by RBI shows that the country's largest lender, SBI, has about 5783 ATMs in metro cities while non metros and semi urban areas have 7511 and 6419 ATMs respectively. In rural regions the bank has 2756 ATMs.
After SBI, the bank having the largest network of ATMs in non metro areas is another leading public sector bank, Punjab National Bank. According to RBI's data PNB has more ATMs in non metro regions than in metros.
The analysis also revealed that private sector banks such as ICICI Bank and Axis Bank still prefer to expand their presence in metros than in rural or semi urban areas. In private banks, Axis Bank has the most number of ATMs across the country followed by HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.
The General Sectretary of Assocham, Mr. D.S. Rawat said that the finance ministry is very interested in the financial inclusion program specially in the rural areas, which can be achieved only by using technology like mobile telephony and ATMs.
